L’BEAUTÉ When did you first realize that makeup was more than a passion, that it would become your career?

CAROLINA GONZÁLEZ Since I was a child, I used to look up to my older brother, who passed away three years ago. He was my idol, an artist who painted, sculpted, and created everything he touched. I grew up in a very artistic family , we all painted, played instruments, and danced. I started by drawing, and when I was little, one of my best friends competed in pageants. I began helping her with her brows, and eventually, I was doing her makeup. I can honestly say I’ve been doing makeup all my life. Later, I entered the fashion world and studied at FIT. I started with day classes, but they were expensive, so I switched to night school. Not long after, I found a job at Carolina Herrera as a receptionist, and that’s where my fashion career began. I eventually worked in-house PR, doing model castings for runway shows, which I loved. I actually never thought of makeup as a career, my desk was filled with photography and design books, and I realized makeup was like painting on a new kind of canvas. That’s when I started doing editorials, the most artistic form of all. But of course, we all need to make a living, so I began taking on projects in music, then Victoria’s Secret for decades, and everything evolved from there.

You’ve worked with incredible women like Sabrina Carpenter. What do you love most about collaborating with them?

I love Sabrina so much. I’ve been working with her since she was 15, and now she’s 26, we’ve been together for over a decade. I met her when an agency asked me to do her makeup, and I said yes. In this industry, you always want to meet new people and expand creatively. I didn’t know her show back then, but once I met her, I adored her, she’s sweet, funny, smart, and incredibly talented.

Your makeup always feels modern, fresh, and effortless. What’s your approach to achieving that perfect balance?

I love enhancing a woman’s natural beauty, not covering it. Skin should always look like skin. I focus a lot on preparation: cleansing, hydrating, and calming the skin before makeup. I love gentle products that don’t cause irritation, 111Skin and SK-II are my go-tos. Skin prep is everything; it determines how makeup will sit. Many of my clients travel a lot and their skin can get dehydrated, so I use hydrating masks. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with one from KNESKO.

What are your holy grail products that never leave your kit?

Hydrating creams that work for everyone, the Celestial Black Diamond Cream from 111Skin, SK-II moisturizer, and the KNESKO mask. For base, I always use Armani Luminous Silk; it gives that second-skin effect. I also love Armani’s Cheek Tint in shades 62, 53, and 65, lately, 65 is my favorite, and the powder blush in 61. I recently did a lash collaboration with Velour; they’re self-stick lashes that go underneath and are completely undetectable, life-changing! For lips, I love a matte finish, especially the Lip Power Matte by Armani, and I never go anywhere without Aquaphor. My favorite setting spray is the new One/Size (yellow cap); it’s mattifying, weightless, and even has SPF.

What are some of the tips you always give your clients for flawless skin and makeup?
I’m obsessed with beauty devices. My top three are the Uplift-5, the LYMA Laser Pro, and Medilift. The Uplift-5 helps sculpt the jawline and boost collagen. I even have two, one for my vanity and one in my bag. The LYMA Laser completely transforms the skin, and the Medilift works facial muscles beautifully. Consistency is key, you have to use them often to see results.

From your experience, what are the biggest beauty do’s and don’ts for 2025?

No baking, it looks heavy in person. I love when people use makeup as a form of self-expression, to boost their confidence. My number one “do” is hydration, it starts from within. Sleep well, eat fiber-rich, unprocessed foods, it all shows on your skin.

Can you share a “pinch-me” moment from your career, something that made you realize how far you’ve come?

Definitely my Emmy nomination, it was unexpected. Another emotional moment was when Sabrina performed at Coachella and the crowd was screaming; I cried! I’m so grateful to still be working with her, so much of my success is thanks to Sabrina. Also, my recent American Vogue cover with Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, there’s a close-up of Gigi with freckles and sunburn that I created intentionally. It looks like she’s wearing no makeup, but every detail was painted to tell a story, a true cowgirl moment.
