From being a dancer to sharing the screen with Tom Cruise, Monica Barbaro has bloomed into one of Hollywood’s promising stars. Even so, the Californian actress remains down to earth and is completely chill about her upcoming film about Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, ‘A Complete Unknown’, and meeting her co-star Timotheé Chalamet while playing guitar. She’s also all about admiring all art forms and natural beauty.
“Both roles–Pheonix in Top Gun and Joan in A Complete Unkown–pushed me in unique ways, and that’s what I love about acting; you can submerge yourself in completely new and different worlds.”

L’Beauté You started out as a dancer, when did you know you wanted to be an actor?
Monica Barbaro I think somewhere in me I always knew I wanted to act. When I was 12, I played a character-focused role in The Nutcracker and later worked on a Shakespeare assignment in school and had never worked harder for anything at school, so those moments made me realize how much I loved performing. Dance became my creative outlet for a while, but acting eventually took over.

LB Where were you and was it like to get the call for your first big role?
MB It’s funny, I remember the first series that I got, I had absolutely no money, I was starting to be in debt and just wanted to act so badly but felt that I would never really be able to cross over into the world of employment. Then I got the call and it felt like my life was shifted, like I could finally say, ‘Okay, I can do this,’ and I could financially hold on.

LB And your role as Joan Baez on ‘A Complete Unknown’?
MB I got an email from Jim [Mangold] with the subject line saying, ‘Joan is yours,’ I fell over! I had auditioned in 2020 and my first meeting with Jim was in 2023. But right after the call, I immediately grabbed my sister’s guitar—which I didn’t know how to play—and thought, ‘I have so much to learn.’ That moment was both thrilling and daunting. Those are probably the biggest three moments of my life where I felt like everything changed.

LB As different as those two last characters were, how do you generally prepare for a role?
MB Yeah, these last two required completely different approaches. For Top Gun, the physical preparation was intense. We spent months flying, and by the end, even the way we walked changed. They actually reshot our introduction scene to reflect the confidence we had gained. And for Joan, it was all about the music. I spent months practicing guitar to embody her musical style and energy. It wasn’t just about learning the instrument but making it feel natural and authentic to her. Both roles pushed me in unique ways, but that’s what I love about acting—you get to dive into entirely new worlds.

LB Joan is so iconic, she’s a force of nature, an activist. What similarities do you feel you had with her and what did you learn from portraying her?
MB Well, of course we have very different lives, but she did wind up in the Bay Area, which is where I’m from, so her being sort of drawn to that environment, really resonated with me. I admire her so much. She’s incredibly confident, knowing the power of her voice both in music and activism. But talking to her revealed a more human side of her. She came forward with all these other pieces of her, like the fact that she had a lot of stage fright, and she once told me she used to fall asleep with her guitar just to learn a song, and I found myself doing the same. What stuck with me most was a lesson from our director, James, that he reminded me that portraying someone isn’t about mimicry—it’s about capturing their essence and humanity. That insight freed me from perfectionism and helped me focus on telling her story authentically.

LB What was it like working with Timothée Chalamet on A Complete Unknown?
MB Oh, it was lovely. We didn’t meet until just before filming, and our first meeting was during a music rehearsal, so I feel like that set the tone for our working relationship—it wasn’t about small talk or schmoozing around talking about our lives; it was about the music. Playing together felt magical, and any nerves I had disappeared. Getting to start there was super helpful and kind of surreal and beautiful. It was also similar to how Joan and Bob Dylan first connected, which made the experience even more special.

LB Let’s talk about fashion. How would you say your career has brought you closer to that world?
MB So much so, I mean, I think clothing is such a beautiful way of expressing yourself. Growing up in California, my mom and I loved visiting all the exhibits in San Francisco—Balenciaga, Jean-Paul Gaultier—you name it. She also taught me how to sew and she was the wardrobe mistress of my ballet for a year, so we both just always like absorbed the artistry of fashion and so it was exciting which is why now, being able to wear pieces from iconic designers feels surreal. At first I was shocked at how many events you can do in a row and therefore the fashion risks you have to take, which sometimes may end up in mistakes in a way. But I’ve learned to remind myself that, in a way, it’s an opportunity to play dress up and it’s really cool.
LB And what has your relationship with Bvlgari been like?
MB Working with Bvlgari has been a dream. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and have been so generous and kind. and just been so, they’ve been so generous and kind. I can’t believe what they’ve placed on my body at times! I normally wear very simple things, and I was lent a white gold Serpenti bracelet for a film festival, and I threw it on and kept it on for the entire three days I was there and it just felt right. I love timeless, versatile pieces like that. They also very generously gifted me a Serpenti watch, which blew me away. What a dream. that will definitely be coming back out every elegant evening I have.

LB And finally, what’s your beauty philosophy?
MB You know? I try to keep my beauty routines to a minimum. Skincare is my top priority—I have sensitive skin, so I’ve always focused on taking care of it. I’m very old school with that in the sense that I pay more attention to my stress levels, my sleep and what I put into my body because I think your skin ends up showing that. I think HD cameras also give away makeup tricks much more and on Top Gun I had very little makeup and for Joan, almost none; honestly, that’s when I feel most beautiful because it felt authentic. So, yeah, I would say my philosophy is to take care of your body and your skin and that will show in the long run.
