She currently collaborates with Rabanne Makeup, creating looks that reflect the house’s futuristic and sensual DNA. In this interview, we speak with her about the looks developed for this story: the references behind them, the ’90s influence running throughout, and how she balances her own visual language with the identity of the brand.

L’BEAUTÉ Creativamente creciste en el Londres de los años 90, una época decisiva para la moda y la belleza. ¿Cómo nació tu amor por el maquillaje y en qué momento supiste que ese era tu camino?
DIANE KENDAL Desde que tenía como cinco años, siempre me sentí atraído por eso. Mi papá trabajaba en una estación de televisión local y, a veces, dejaba a mi hermana y a mí con los maquillistas que trabajaban ahí. Recuerdo verlos trabajar y pensar que era increíble. En ese momento realmente no entendía qué era exactamente, pero me fascinaba.
L’BEAUTÉ You came of age creatively in 1990s London, a defining era for fashion and beauty. How did you first fall in love with makeup, and when did you realize it was your path?
DIANE KENDAL Since I was about five years old, I was always drawn to it. My dad worked at a local TV station, and sometimes he would drop my sister and me off with the makeup artists there. I remember watching them work and thinking it was amazing. At the time I didn’t really understand what it was, but I loved it.

As the makeup artist behind Rabanne Beauty, how do you translate the house’s futuristic yet sensual identity into modern makeup? What makes Rabanne stand apart in today’s beauty landscape?
I think the DNA of the house really helps guide the looks we create. From there, you just adjust it to what feels relevant at the time. A lot of it comes from Julien’s collection itself, which has a slightly grungy ’90s feeling, so you already have a sense of the kind of image he’s looking for in the hair and makeup.
¿Cuáles son tus productos favoritos de Rabanne en este momento y cómo te gusta usarlos, tanto backstage como en la vida real?
Me gustan mucho los Color Shots porque puedes aplicarlos con los dedos. Dan una capa de color muy linda en los ojos, y también me encanta usarlos en las mejillas.
What are your personal favorite Rabanne products right now, and how do you like to use them, both backstage and in real life?
I really like the Color Shots because you can use them with your fingers. They give you a really nice layer of color on the eyes, and I love using them on the cheeks as well.
¿Hay alguna técnica signature en la que siempre confías, algo sutil pero transformador, que eleve instantáneamente un look?
Mantenemos la base muy ligera, solo una cobertura sutil. En los ojos, estamos creando un efecto ligeramente grunge con un poco de contour. Los labios se mantienen muy naturales, con un bálsamo, y las cejas también muy naturales, solo rellenadas donde hace falta.
También añadimos un pequeño toque del producto dúo sobre las mejillas. Algunas de las chicas tienen un look más cálido, con contour y un tono café más marcado en los ojos. Realmente puedes jugar con esto de distintas maneras, pero el foco está sobre todo en las mejillas y en los ojos.
Is there a signature technique you rely on, something subtle but transformative, that instantly elevates a look?
We keep the foundation very minimal, just a light base. For the eyes, we’re creating a slightly grungy effect with a bit of contour. The lips stay very natural with a balm, and the eyebrows are also very natural, just filled where necessary.
We also add a small touch of the duo product on top of the cheeks. Some of the girls have a warmer look with contour and a stronger brown tone on the eyes. You can really play with it in different ways, but the focus is mostly on the cheeks and the eyes.
Viendo hacia adelante, ¿qué cambios sientes que vienen para la belleza? ¿Nos estamos moviendo hacia piel más cruda, color de alto impacto, hyper-gloss o algo completamente distinto? ¿Y cómo encaja Rabanne dentro de esa evolución?
Hay una cierta vibra noventera que está regresando. Pero hoy en día casi cualquier cosa puede volverse relevante. Hay muchas tendencias ocurriendo al mismo tiempo: a veces ojos más oscuros, a veces color, a veces casi nada de color.
Para mí, todo se trata realmente de la sensación que quieres comunicar. Con esta colección, la sensación es divertida. Es muy colorida, y también estamos jugando con los materiales de la colección.
Looking ahead, what beauty shifts do you feel coming next? Are we moving toward raw skin, high-impact color, hyper-gloss, or something entirely different? And how does Rabanne fit into that evolution?
There’s a bit of a ’90s feeling coming back. But these days almost anything can become relevant. There are a lot of different trends happening at the same time, sometimes darker eyes, sometimes color, sometimes almost no color.
