L’BEAUTÉ Has tenido un recorrido extraordinario desde estudiar química hasta convertirte en la nariz creativa de Hermès. Mirando hacia atrás, ¿cuál ha sido ese momento “pellízcame” en tu carrera?

CHRISTNE NAGEL En realidad, no hubo muchos momentos “increíbles”. Siempre estoy esperando el siguiente. Pero hace aproximadamente 13 años me hice una pregunta muy clara: ¿Cuál es tu sueño hoy? Y la respuesta fue convertirme en perfumista in-house dentro de una Maison.

En París solo existen seis casas que cuentan con un perfumista interno: Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Guerlain, Louis Vuitton y Hermès. Y había una sola que realmente me tentaba: Hermès.

Cuando Catherine Fulconis vino a verme y me preguntó: “Christine, ¿te gustaría unirte a nosotros?”, por fuera me mantuve muy correcta, pero por dentro fue un verdadero tsunami emocional. Cuando un sueño se cumple, es un momento profundamente poderoso. Sin duda, ese fue el punto más alto de mi carrera.

Deconstructing Musc Pallida through the vision of Christine Nagel

L’BEAUTÉ: You’ve had an extraordinary journey — from studying chemistry to becoming the creative nose of Hermès. Looking back, what has been your true “pinch-me” moment?

CHRISTINE NAGEL: In truth, there haven’t been many “incredible” moments. I’m always waiting for the next one. But about 13 years ago, I asked myself a very clear question: What is your dream today? And the answer was to become an in-house perfumer within a Maison.

In Paris, there are only six houses that have an internal perfumer: Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Guerlain, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. And there was only one that truly tempted me: Hermès.

When Catherine Fulconis came to see me and asked, “Christine, would you like to join us?”, outwardly I remained very composed, but inside it was a true emotional tsunami. When a dream comes true, it is a profoundly powerful moment. Without a doubt, that was the highest point of my career.

Las fragancias de Hermès suelen describirse como emociones transformadas en aroma. ¿Dónde encuentras inspiración al comenzar una nueva creación?

Tienes toda la razón al hablar de emociones. Para mí, todo comienza con una emoción fuerte: viajando, descubriendo un platillo, oliendo una flor o conociendo a alguien. Cuando algo realmente me conmueve, ocupa un lugar en mi mente.

Después busco la materia prima que pueda traducir esa emoción. Cuando la encuentro, la historia comienza. Necesito ambas cosas: la emoción y el material.

¿Qué crees que revela una fragancia sobre la persona que la usa?

Es algo muy personal. Hay personas que quieren un perfume íntimo, solo para ellas. Otras disfrutan cuando alguien les dice: “Hueles delicioso”. Y otras buscan un perfume que las proteja o que exprese algo más profundo. Depende completamente del individuo. Mi papel es ofrecerles esa libertad.

Hablemos de la nueva fragancia. ¿Qué significa el nombre Musc Pallida?

En la colección Hermessence siempre destacamos dos materias primas colocadas en gloria. Musc Pallida hace referencia al almizcle y al iris, específicamente el Iris Pallida de Florencia.

El almizcle es difícil de explicar. Históricamente provenía de un origen animal, lo cual hoy está completamente prohibido. Actualmente utilizamos moléculas que recrean ese efecto.

Éste se funde con la piel y aporta volumen, suavidad y sensualidad sin ser dulce ni amargo. Me gusta compararlo con una crinolina: sin ella, todo cae plano. O como la levadura en un pastel, que le da estructura y cuerpo.

El iris, en cambio, es atalcado y ligeramente áspero. El almizcle suaviza maravillosamente al iris. Y después aparecen otros materiales, como un sándalo magnífico, que completan la composición.

What do you think a fragrance reveals about the person who wears it?

It’s something very personal. Some people want a fragrance that is intimate, just for themselves. Others enjoy when someone tells them, “You smell wonderful.” And others look for a perfume that protects them or expresses something deeper. It completely depends on the individual. My role is to offer them that freedom.

Let’s talk about the new fragrance. What does the name Musc Pallida mean?

Within the Hermessence collection, we always highlight two raw materials placed in the spotlight. Musc Pallida refers to musk and iris — specifically Iris Pallida from Florence.

Musk is difficult to explain. Historically, it came from an animal origin, which is now completely prohibited. Today, we use molecules that recreate that effect.

It blends with the skin and brings volume, softness, and sensuality without being sweet or bitter. I like to compare it to a crinoline: without it, everything falls flat. Or like yeast in a cake — it gives structure and body.

Iris, on the other hand, is powdery and slightly rough. The musk softens the iris beautifully. And then other materials emerge, such as a magnificent sandalwood, which completes the composition.

¿Cómo interactúan estos materiales entre sí?

Cuando mezclas dos materiales en perfumería, no los hueles por separado. Se crea un tercer aroma. Como un pintor que mezcla rojo y azul para crear morado, yo mezclo materias buscando un nuevo resultado olfativo. Con 20 materiales, las combinaciones posibles son infinitas. Eso es lo que hace este trabajo tan complejo y fascinante.

How do these materials interact with one another?

When you blend two materials in perfumery, you no longer smell them separately. A third scent is created. Like a painter mixing red and blue to create purple, I combine raw materials in search of a new olfactory result. With 20 materials, the possible combinations are infinite. That’s what makes this work so complex and fascinating.

What emotion were you hoping to evoke with this creation?

If I had a formula that guaranteed a specific emotion, I would use it every time. But it doesn’t work that way.

First, the perfume has to move me. Then, it must embody the values of Hermès: precision, attention to detail, and the supremacy of raw materials. A fragrance is often the first object someone purchases from Hermès, so it must contain all the values of the Maison within the bottle.

¿Qué emoción buscabas provocar con esta creación?

Si tuviera una fórmula que garantizara una emoción específica, la usaría siempre. Pero no funciona así.

Primero, el perfume debe emocionarme a mí. Después, debe encarnar los valores de Hermès: precisión, atención al detalle y la supremacía de las materias primas. El perfume suele ser el primer objeto que alguien compra de Hermès, por lo que debe contener todos los valores de la Maison dentro del frasco.

Were there technical challenges in working with musk?

Yes. Musk is usually a base note, but I wanted it to be present from the very first instant and to last throughout the day. Balancing volatility and longevity is a technical challenge that I truly enjoy. It’s the exact point where chemistry and creativity intersect.

How does the fragrance evolve on the skin?

This fragrance remains very true to itself. From the top notes to the base, the musk and iris line stays consistent. It is long-lasting, yet always delicate. If you apply it to a pashmina, it will linger beautifully for a long time.

How do you know when a fragrance is finished?

When it truly smells like Hermès. It’s instinctive. I work with complete creative freedom, without deadlines. When I feel it’s ready, I present it to Pierre-Alexis Dumas.

What does Musc Pallida represent within your journey at Hermès?

Originally, Musc Pallida existed as a highly concentrated oil. But many people began asking me if it could become a perfume. It became a snowball effect.

I realized that Hermès needed a musk — elegant, sensual, and discreet. I feel very proud of this creation. I believe it fits perfectly within the story of Hermessence, and I hope it will have a very long life.

¿Qué representa Musc Pallida dentro de tu recorrido en Hermès?

Originalmente, Musc Pallida existía como un aceite muy concentrado. Pero muchas personas comenzaron a preguntarme si podía convertirse en perfume. Fue un efecto bola de nieve.

Me di cuenta de que Hermès necesitaba un almizcle: elegante, sensual y discreto. Me siento muy orgullosa de esta creación. Creo que encaja perfectamente en la historia de Hermessence y espero que tenga una vida muy larga.
