L’Beauté ¿Qué significado tiene el sol para ti?
Macarena Achaga Creo que es una pregunta hermosa. Yo nací en un lugar donde generalmente hace mucho frío, entonces lo primero que hago cuando me despierto es ir a buscar un rayito de sol, y me tomo ahí el desayuno. Es una costumbre que sigo haciendo, me despierto y voy a una ventana donde haya un rayito de sol para desayunar ahí. Para mí, es una fuente de energía vital, siento que me da energía y si no lo tengo no sabes cuanto lo extraño. Lo siento muy importante. Además, en general el sol es energía masculina y la luna es energía femenina, y siento que es un tipo de energía que me hace muy bien en la mañana porque me da la fuerza para conquistar el día.
L’Beauté: What does the sun mean to you?
Macarena Achaga: I think it’s a beautiful question. I was born in a place where it’s usually very cold, so the first thing I do when I wake up is to go find a ray of sun, and I have my breakfast there. It’s a habit I still keep; I wake up and go to a window where there’s a ray of sun to have my breakfast. For me, it’s a source of vital energy; I feel it gives me energy, and if I don’t have it, you can’t imagine how much I miss it. I feel it’s very important. Also, in general, the sun represents masculine energy, and the moon is feminine energy. I feel it’s a type of energy that does me a lot of good in the morning because it gives me the strength to conquer the day.
LB ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de estar en la playa además del sol?
MA Justo ahora tengo un viaje de trabajo a Barcelona, allá ya hace calor y uno de mis mejores amigos de la escuela vive ahí. Lo primero que le dije fue, que cuando llegue a Barcelona, vamos a ir a la playa, abrir una sandía, la vamos a vaciar para echarle un poquito de vino rosado, vamos a poner música y a disfrutar de la playa. Es un lugar de mucha conexión y mucho disfrute, de sabor, permiso y desconexión. Cuando quiero hacer mis escapadas para desconectarme, suelen ser a la playa porque tienen el condimento especial del mar que limpia la energía.
LB: What do you enjoy the most about being at the beach besides the sun?
MA: Right now, I have a work trip to Barcelona. It’s already warm there, and one of my best friends from school lives there. The first thing I told him was that when I arrive in Barcelona, we’re going to the beach, we’ll open a watermelon, hollow it out, pour in a bit of rosé wine, put on some music, and just enjoy the beach. It’s a place of a lot of connection and enjoyment, of flavor, permission, and disconnection. When I want to take a break to disconnect, it’s usually at the beach because it has that special element of the sea that cleanses your energy.
LB ¿Cómo te cuidas la piel cuando vas a la playa?
MA Aprendí a cuidarme la piel a los 14 años; desde esa edad uso protector solar llueve, truene o haya mucho sol. Creo que eso es lo que me ha ayudado a mantener mi piel siempre igual, es preventivo y por eso hay que empezar a usarlo desde antes. Mis cuidados en la playa y en mi día a día son súper intensivos. Al sol le tengo mucho respeto y siento que son varios pasos. Siempre me hidrato antes de ir a la playa y luego lo sello con productos que no me irriten, después uso crema hidratante y arriba protector solar. Para mí, el protector solar siempre cierra la rutina, es como una especie de barrera y en las noches uso aceite para que todo lo que me puse se quede.
LB: How do you take care of your skin when you go to the beach?
MA: I learned to take care of my skin at 14; since that age, I’ve used sunscreen rain or shine. I think that’s what’s helped me keep my skin looking the same; it’s preventive, which is why you need to start using it early. My beach routine and my daily routine are very intense. I have a lot of respect for the sun and feel there are many steps. I always hydrate before going to the beach and then seal it with products that don’t irritate me; afterward, I use a moisturizer and top it with sunscreen. For me, sunscreen is always the final step, like a barrier, and at night I use oil to make sure everything I applied stays in place.
LB ¿Qué es lo que te parece más fascinante de la mitología griega?
MA A mí la parte de la mitología griega me gusta desde chiquita. Cuando estaba estudiando en la escuela fue la parte que más me divirtió estudiar. Mi historia favorita es la de cómo se crean las temporadas. La historia de Perséfone es una de las más bonitas porque es una explicación de cómo nacen las temporadas. Básicamente la secuestran y se la llevan al inframundo, su mamá pone el grito en el cielo y dice que hasta que no le regresen a su hija, no va a ser fértil la tierra entonces con el paso del tiempo llega a un acuerdo con su secuestrador y por eso hay seis meses de sequía y seis meses de cultivo.
LB: What do you find most fascinating about Greek mythology?
MA: I’ve loved Greek mythology since I was little. When I was in school, it was my favorite subject to study. My favorite story is how the seasons were created. The story of Persephone is one of the most beautiful because it explains the birth of the seasons. Basically, she’s kidnapped and taken to the underworld. Her mother raises a commotion and says the earth won’t be fertile until her daughter is returned to her. Over time, she reaches an agreement with her kidnapper, which is why we have six months of drought and six months of growth.
LB Si vivieras en el Olimpo ¿de qué serías diosa?
MA Yo creo que la del amor. Siento que Afrodita es la reina, el amor es todo. Estaba buscándola para ver cómo se veía y se supone que ella le susurraba a los hombres diciéndoles qué hacer. Me parece algo súper icónico del feminismo. Me gusta imaginarme a la mujer en esa posición de poder.
LB: If you lived on Olympus, what would you be the goddess of?
MA: I think I’d be the goddess of love. I feel that Aphrodite is the queen; love is everything. I looked her up to see what she looked like, and supposedly she whispered to men, telling them what to do. I think it’
LB Si no te dedicaras a lo que te dedicas ¿qué harías?
MA Si no fuera actriz sería autor, la verdad es algo que me gusta mucho. Me gusta mucho contar historias pero a su vez creo que hay muchas maneras de llevar tu visión de las cosas, sin duda mi objetivo es hacer cambios de mentalidad en la parte social. Creo que si no estuviera tan involucrada en la actuación, habría encontrado la manera de comunicar y llevar a la sociedad las cosas que yo creo que son importantes. A lo mejor hubiera tenido un podcast, un programa o hubiera sido escritora. Siento que hubiera encontrado la forma de expresarme.
LB: If you didn’t do what you do, what would you do instead?
MA: If I weren’t an actress, I’d be an author; it’s something I really like. I love telling stories, but I also think there are many ways to convey your vision of things. Without a doubt, my goal is to change mindsets in the social sphere. If I weren’t so involved in acting, I would have found a way to communicate and bring to society the things I believe are important. Maybe I would have had a podcast, a show, or been a writer. I feel I would have found a way to express myself.
LB ¿Cuál es tu sueño dorado en lo profesional y en lo personal?
MA Mi sueño dorado se comparte en las dos áreas. Una vida full of joy, llena de goce y disfrute. Creo que ese sueño resume muy bien las dos áreas.
LB ¿Cuál es un logro del que estás muy orgullosa?
MA Trabajar en mi sueño, es probablemente un sueño dorado muy importante cumplido. La realidad es que cuando estaba creciendo, la actuación era algo sumamente lejano a mis posibilidades, haberle dado la vuelta y hacer mi sueño realidad es un mérito mío que con mucho esfuerzo sembré y coseché. Siempre me gusta compartir porque no todos saben de los sacrificios que hay atrás. Me parece importante compartir esa parte porque esa es la forma que tenemos de inspirar. Si yo lo pude hacer seguramente quien se lo proponga lo puede hacer.
LB: What’s your golden dream, professionally and personally?
MA: My golden dream is shared across both areas—a life full of joy, filled with pleasure and enjoyment. I think that dream perfectly sums up both areas.
LB: What’s an achievement you’re very proud of?
MA: Working on my dream is probably a very important golden dream come true. Growing up, acting felt so far from my possibilities. To have turned it around and made my dream a reality is an accomplishment I’ve achieved with hard work. I like to share this because not everyone knows about the sacrifices behind it. I think it’s important to share that part because it’s how we inspire others. If I could do it, surely anyone who sets their mind to it can too.
LB ¿Cuándo supiste que querías ser actriz?
MA Yo creo que nací sabiendo que quería ser actriz. Había mucha claridad y certeza. Son cosas que a veces se sienten y eso siempre estuvo ahí. Quizá en alguna otra vida fui actriz en el Olimpo o en Grecia actuando para toda la sociedad. No creo que haya una explicación lógica, cada uno viene con sus batallas. Yo pienso que si no hubiera tenido tanta claridad a lo mejor ya no me hubiera dado tiempo. Fue tanto el camino que me tocó recorrer que la virtud en eso fue que tuve tiempo para hacerlo.
LB: When did you know you wanted to be an actress?
MA: I think I was born knowing I wanted to be an actress. There was a lot of clarity and certainty; sometimes, these things are just felt, and it was always there. Maybe in another life, I was an actress in Olympus or in Greece, performing for society. I don’t think there’s a logical explanation; everyone comes with their own battles. I think that if I hadn’t had so much clarity, I might not have had time. The path I had to travel was so long, but the blessing in that was having the time to do it.
LB Mencionaste que te encanta la idea de tener una aportación social y de transmitir un mensaje, podríamos decir que esa es la parte buena de la fama, ¿cuál dirías que es la parte difícil?
MA Creo que la exposición es la parte positiva y la negativa es que esa misma exposición hace que en ocasiones salgan partes de ti que todavía estás resolviendo. La verdad es que lo ideal sería poder decidir que compartir y que no pero realmente vivimos en un mundo donde todo está a un alcance muy fácil. Hasta da un poco de culpa, uno siente la responsabilidad de querer compartir todo para que la gente pueda ser parte de, es un poco la decisión que uno toma cuando decide ser parte de este mundo. La parte más difícil es aprender a compartir las partes incompletas de ti pero viene con cosas tan bonitas que toca sobrellevarlo.
LB ¿Cuáles son tus planes y proyectos del futuro cercano?
MA Ahora estoy terminando de grabar Coalición que es un nuevo proyecto de HBO. Todavía no puedo contar mucho porque todo es secreto pero estamos en la recta final. Me emociona mucho porque lo podrán ver pronto y es una historia de mucha fortaleza femenina. Hace mucha referencia a este photoshoot.
LB: You mentioned you love the idea of making a social contribution and conveying a message. We could say that’s the positive side of fame; what would you say is the difficult part?
MA: I think the exposure is the positive part, and the downside is that the same exposure sometimes brings out parts of yourself that you’re still working on. Ideally, you’d be able to choose what to share and what not to, but we really live in a world where everything is so easily accessible. You even feel a bit guilty; there’s a sense of responsibility in wanting to share everything so people can be a part of it. It’s a choice you make when you decide to be part of this world. The hardest part is learning to share the incomplete parts of yourself, but it comes with such beautiful things that it’s worth managing.
LB: What are your plans and projects for the near future?
MA: I’m finishing filming Coalition, a new HBO project. I can’t say much because it’s all a secret, but we’re in the final stretch. I’m really excited because people will be able to see it soon, and it’s a story of great feminine strength. It has a lot to do with this photoshoot.
